In this wonderful artwork, the forest is abuzz with the news — a new Prince has been born in the thicket, a deer fawn named Bambi. With his friends, Thumper the rabbit and Flower the skunk, Bambi learns of the forest’s wonders and dangers — especially a danger called “MAN”. Released in 1942, Bambi is the fifth animated feature to come out of the Walt Disney Studios and is considered by many to be the most dramatic.
Rodel Gonzalez’s skilful ability to enhance the grandeur of the commonplace is quite evident in this piece. Rodel depicts Bambi and Thumper meeting Flower for the first time. Keep in mind that the 1942 release was action packed, fraught with tension and suspense. Yet Rodel chose this scene to interpret: a wonderful scene full of innocence and friendship. We look in and notice the true beauty between these characters, which is amplified by the magnificence of the surrounding forest.
Beautiful Flowers is truly a fabulous example of Rodel’s approach to Disney artwork, in which he manipulates the original perspective from the classic Disney scene. In this piece, he draws the point-of-view back and elevates it slightly. This, in turn, makes the three figures smaller than their environment, allowing their surrounding to play a bigger role in conveying the true splendor of the scene.
